Additions to your Home

If you are outgrowing your current home, but you do not wish to move, one solution may be to build an addition. Before deciding to build and addition, consideration should be given to the following:

Financial Feasibility

Before making a final decision, you should ensure that increasing the size of your home will make sense financially based on criteria such as: the home’s current value and size compared to others in the neighborhood, as well as the amount of equity in the home.

Size

The addition should begin with a well though; out concept that gives consideration to the desired use of the space, the dimensions of the new space as well as how it will impact the existing structure.

Blending the old with the new

The goal is to deliver a finished product that has the same look and feel of the pre-existing home. This is consideration should be adhered to both on the exterior as well as the interior.

Upgrading your systems

If your addition requires extensive changes to your roof system, this would make an excellent time to change out the shingles on an aging roof. In many older homes all the breakers in the breaker box have already been assigned to serve the existing home, in this case a subpanel will need to be installed and depending on the condition of the wiring and location of the electrical service, it may be an excellent time to consider completing an electrical upgrade on the home which could include a new service main, meter base, and breaker panel.
